Hydraulic hose wire braid failure and choosing safe solutions

Hydraulic hose wire braid failure and choosing safe solutions

During the operation of hydraulic systems, hose wear, cracking, or wire braid failure are common occurrences. Reusing damaged hoses by cutting off the end and recrimping is often considered by many customers to save costs. However, is this approach truly safe and viable?

Below is a real-world case study recently handled by Vietnam Hydraulic Equipment Joint Stock Company (VHE), providing a clear perspective on safety standards in hydraulic hose assembly.

1. Order context: Request to cut and recrimp a sample hose

Recently, VHE's workshop received an order with a specific request: cut off one end of a customer-provided sample hose and crimp a new fitting onto it.

2. Technical evaluation: Why can't we reuse a hose with unravelled wire braids?

Upon receiving the hose, VHE's technical team inspected its actual condition. The inspection revealed that the end of the hydraulic hose was completely frayed, with the internal steel wire reinforcement unravelled.

Many believe that simply cutting off this frayed section would allow the hose to be placed back into the crimping machine. However, according to VHE's strict technical standards, cutting the frayed part as originally requested would cause the internal steel core to lose its original cross-braided structure. Consequently, the wire braid would continue to unravel even after being compressed by the ferrule, preventing the fitting from securely gripping the hose body. Persisting in reusing this hose section would lead to risks of oil leaks, fitting blow-offs, or even hose bursts, posing direct dangers to the machinery system and operators.

3. VHE's Solution: Complete replacement with a brand new high-pressure hydraulic hose

To ensure safety and long-term operational efficiency for the customer's system, VHE advised against reusing the old hose. Instead, we proceeded to cut and crimp an entirely new section of hydraulic hose using high-quality materials and specifications, including:

- Hydraulic hose: Genuine Teknoblast 1/2'' high-pressure hose from Vitillo (Italy) – ensuring outstanding durability, superior pressure resistance, and a long operational lifespan.

- Ferrule: Specialized high-pressure ferrule capable of withstanding up to 750 bar, maintaining a solid connection between the hose and the fitting under extreme working conditions.

- Fitting: 1/2'' concave cone fitting, meticulously machined to create an absolute seal upon connection.

The assembly process is accurately executed using modern hydraulic crimping machines, ensuring uniformity and the highest standard of output quality.
