Distinguishing between Heavy series and Light series Hydraulic pipe clamps

During the installation and maintenance of the hydraulic and pneumatic piping systems within industrial plants, selecting the correct pipe clamps is a decisive factor in minimizing vibration and ensuring structural support. Under the international DIN 3015 standard, pipe clamps are primarily categorized into two main lineups: the Light Series and the Heavy Series.

Therefore, what exactly sets these two series apart, and how can you ensure you are choosing the right solution for your specific system? Discover the technical differences and selection criteria in our detailed guide below.

Distinguishing between Heavy series and Light series Hydraulic pipe clamps

1. Light Series Pipe Clamps

Light Series hydraulic clamps are engineered with a plastic clamp body and thin steel weld plates to optimize weight, space, and material costs.

Characteristic and Specific Applications

- Tube OD pressure: These clamps are specifically designed for small-diameter hydraulic lines operating under low to medium pressure. These are ideal solutions for pneumatic systems or lubrication lines where the environment is relatively static with minimal vibration.

- Space Optimization: The single or double-hole light series clamps are perfect for tight installation spots, such as against machine walls or in narrow corners where heavy-duty clamps cannot fit.
- Space Optimization: The single or double-hole light series clamps are perfect for tight installation spots, such as against machine walls or in narrow corners where heavy-duty clamps cannot fit.

- Twin Series Tube Clamps: For systems requiring two parallel lines, Twin Series clamps are the preferred choice. The market currently only offers the Twin Series in the Light version. Heavy Series twin clamps do not exist because parallel lines are typically return lines operating at low pressure.

Commonly Used Light Series Sizes:

  • Clamp Set OD6: L1, L*G3-106.0
  • Clamp Set OD8: L1, L*G3-108.0
  • Clamp Set OD10: L1, L*G3-110.0
  • Clamp Set OD13.5: L2, L*G3-213.5
  • Clamp Set OD15: L2, L*G3-215.0
  • Clamp Set OD16: L2, L*G3-216.0
  • Clamp Set OD17.2: L2, L*G3-217.2

Light Series Pipe Clamps

2. Heavy Series Pipe Clamps

In contrast to the light version, Heavy series pipe clamps (available in aluminum) feature a robust design. They are built with significantly thicker clamp bodies and heavy-duty steel weld plates, paired with large hexagonal bolts to maximize contact surface area and force distribution.

Characteristic and Specific Applications

- Large Scale Standards: According to technical recommendations, the Heavy Series is mandatory for securing rigid piping systems with an outer diameter (OD) of 33.7mm (1 inch) or larger.

- Superior Shock and Vibration Resistance: These are the go-to solutions for systems subject to extreme, continuous recoil and vibration, such as large hydraulic presses, overhead cranes, or marine propulsion systems.

- Multi-tier Clamping Solutions: A core distinction of the Heavy Series is its ability to be configured into multi-tier (stacked) arrangements—a feature not available for the Light Series. However, to maintain absolute structural integrity, engineers should limit stacking to a maximum of 03 pipes per position. For installations exceeding this limit, the load should be distributed across a new clamping rail.

Commonly Used Heavy Series Plastic and Aluminum Sizes:

  • Heavy Series Set (Plastic), OD10: H1, H*G1-110.0
  • Heavy Series Set (Plastic), OD12: H1, H*G1-112.0
  • Heavy Series Set (Plastic), OD13.5: H1, H*G1-113.5
  • Heavy Series Set (Plastic), OD15: H1, H*G1-115.0
  • Aluminum Clamp Set, OD16: H1, ALHG1-116.0
  • Aluminum Clamp Set, OD20: H2, ALHG1-220.0
  • Aluminum Clamp Set, OD21.3: H2, ALHG1-221.3
  • Aluminum Clamp Set, OD25: H2, ALHG1-225.0
